situated at the base of a natural landmark called Red Rock, approximately 18km
north west of Colac. Red
Rock, 230 metres above sea-level, was once a volcano and hence the landscape at
this site is scattered with vents, some of which are now crater lakes.
Alvie derived its name from an early landowner William
Robertson who was born at Alvie in Scotland (hence the name of the local area).
History Consolidation of the rural schools
surrounding the Alvie area was discussed as early as in 1949. After much
spirited discussion between various district representatives each trying hard
to present a case for the establishment of the consolidated school in their district,
the Education Department finally ruled that it be established at Alvie.
Accordingly
in 1950 about 11 acres of land was bought from Mr.George Buckle at a price between
One hundred pounds and One hundred and twenty five pounds per acre. This land
together with the adjoining 3 acres of the Alvie State School land amounted to
almost 15 acres. The surrounding schools were closed in 1951 and 1952
and their pupils were conveyed to Alvie by bus. More... |
